Florida Department of Education For further information on any of the programs listed below, please go to www.firn.edu/doe/cgi-bin/doehome/menu.pl State Matching Challenge Grant This new grant program provides state matching funds on a dollar-for-dollar basis with local donations from private sector entities or individuals in support of low performing schools that have received a grade of F in either of the last two years. This is not a competitive grant; it is essentially a grant program that will match local donations on a first come - first serve basis as local donations are received. There is no deadline. model demonstration effort to help students stay in school, graduate, and
improve their opportunities at post-secondary institutions and at the work
place. In addition, Florida Compact seeks out high schools committed to the
most innovative practices that can be showcase windows for other schools to
replicate. The deadline is in mid-April

Partnership Challenge Grant The Business Partnership Challenge Grant program provides planning and
start-up funding for new ventures to improve student performance, the
environment for learning of public schools, and innovative ways to improve
curriculum and instruction at any public school serving selected grades between
K and 12. The grant priorities are currently : (1) Career academies sponsored
by the National Academy Foundation in the fields of financial services and
travel & tourism; (2) Satellite learning centers, particularly of
elementary and middle schools; (3) Innovative programs in support of low
performing students; (4) Internship programs; (5) Elementary and middle school
magnet programs; and (6) Programs serving seriously at-risk middle school

. Florida Learn
and Serve This grant to foster community service learning is federally funded
from the National Community Service Act and applies to all public schools in
Florida. The grant for a single applicant school cannot exceed $18,000 while
three or more schools can jointly apply for funding not to exceed $30,000.
There are also grants available to form Youth Councils that plan and distribute
small grants for student groups wishing to do community service learning; and,
these are three-year grants up to a total of $30,000 of which $15,000 is
available for first year efforts. There is also funding for new initiatives for

Florida Humanities Council: The Florida Humanities Council,
the steward of Florida culture, will provide grants from 1998-2003 to support public
programs based in the humanities and responding to the initiative, Floridians:
Finding a Common Path. Projects eligible for support will vary widely in
design, content and audience; however, all projects must include the
participation of humanities scholars.

. Florida
Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR): Reclamation and Environmental Research
Program The general goal of the
program is to develop improved methods to: (1) Minimize the environmental
impacts of phosphate mining and processing; (2) Restore ecological and hydrological systems; and (3) Reclaim mining and
processing disturbances or wastes to a more environmentally desirable and
useful condition. At this time FIPR feels a particular need to augment its reclamation
and environmental research program in the following areas: (1) Feasibility of establishing mitigation
wetlands on clay settling areas; (2) Water
treatment wetlands on clay settling areas; (3) Increasing biological diversity
in streams on reclaimed lands; (4) Establishment of bay swamps on reclaimed
lands (hydrology, bay tree establishment, etc.); and (5) Design, construction
and management of mine pit lakes to enhance their ecological and recreational

Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Special consideration will be given to distributions and grants to charitable, religious and educational organizations which are organized and operated to help underprivileged or needy people to improve themselves, or to relieve human suffering. The Foundation has made grants for challenge and development purposes, construction and renovation, equipment and expansion of functions, pilot projects and seed start-up of new programs, and study or planning grants to determine feasibility and market. The Foundation has broad interests in human service, education, health care and a limited interest in the arts. There is no deadline.
