UCF Research and Commercialization

University of Central Florida-University of Florida Space Research Initiative (UCF-UF SRI)
FY 2007 - 2008

Call for Proposals

Due March 12, 2007

Announcement and Guidelines
Funding available: $1,000,000

Proposals are requested that support joint UCF-UF programs in the general area of space related research.  Objectives of this initiative include collaboration between UCF and UF in space related research, support in acquiring funded research projects from NASA and other federal sources, support in growing Florida's space industry, and assist KSC in developing its Spaceport Technology Center vision.

Projects that use these funds as matching support to other agencies will receive the highest priority for selection under this program.

It is anticipated that approximately 2 to 5 grants will be awarded.  Estimated range of each award is $100,000 - $300,000.  A total of $500,000 is available for each university. All projects must be joint efforts involving both UCF and UF researchers.  Proposals will be screened and prioritized by external reviewers along with UCF and UF staff.  The university presidents will make the final decisions.  Please submit only one joint proposal to the UCF Office of Research & Commercialization whether or not UCF or UF faculty is acting as Principal Investigator.

Applications are encouraged in the following areas, including but not limited to:

  • Research into the origins and evolution of the solar system and the cosmos.

  • Research into the earth's ecosystem through the use of remote sensing in the space environment.

  • Research into life and microgravity sciences (including life support technology) that support NASA's current and future human space missions.

  • Research that supports space operations via reusable or expendable launch vehicles, including ground support systems, and all other areas of spaceport technology.

  • Research that relates to the development of astronomical and space related instrumentation. Research related to management of fluid systems.

  • Research related to human factors and systems engineering to support launch operations.

  • Research in support of power management for photovoltaic systems such as used for satellites.

  • Research in support of miniaturization, innovative materials, cryogenics, and other technology enabling long space flight.

  • Research that examines the impact of specific NASA educational materials or programs on the achievement of K-12 students.

These areas are intended to capture research that would be of interest to relevant NASA offices and centers, NIH, NSF, and DOD with respect to space missions and operations, and earth observing systems. Research targeted in these areas should have potential future funding sources from these agencies and should be identified in the proposal.

Grants will require a mid-project progress report and a comprehensive final report due by August 30, 2008.

Proposals should be received on or before, but no later than, the close of business on March 12, 2007.  No proposals will be accepted after this date.

UCF will forward the proposals to external reviewers.  Staff from UCF and UF will assist external reviewers with technical assessment and priority ranking. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified when the review is completed.  Funded proposals are expected to initiate research as soon as possible after award and will be funded through June 30, 2008. No extensions will be granted.

Download the proposal format in Adobe PDF format or Word DOC format.  Proposals should follow the required format and must be routed signed by the appropriate university office for processing and official transmittal to UCF.

Please visit this web page regularly for updates. Questions should be addressed to the UCF Proposal Administrator for your college, department, institute, or center.

Award Administration:

After an award is made, all UF faculty will be issued a subcontract from UCF whether or not they are listed as the PI or Co-PI. Please submit one original (please do not staple the original) and six (6) hard copies (the copies may be stapled, rubber banded, or binder clipped) of the proposal to:

  • Qualification of PIs as evidenced by related refereed publications and award success.
  • Strength of the proposed UCF-UF partnership (e.g., is the partnership substantive).
  • Plan for acquiring additional funding from outside sources.
  • Extent to which the proposed work supports the State's goals of building the space industry in Florida and supporting the KSC Spaceport Technology Center vision.
