WHAT: Research Faculty Luncheon
WHEN: Tuesday, April 29, noon to 1:30 p.m.
WHERE: Student Union, Key West Room 218 AB
TOPIC: THEORIST IN PLASMALAND: ENCOUNTERS WITH SPACE WEATHER PHYSICS
Dr. Bhimsen Shivamoggi, Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCF, will give a presentation on theoretical explorations of prime plasma phenomena underlying some aspects of space weather such as magnetospheric substorms and solar flares. Two such phenomena are magnetic field reconnection and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence which have been designated by the National Research Council as high priority yet poorly understood areas. During his lunch time presentation, Dr. Shivamoggi will give a brief overview of his recent theoretical research in these areas (http://arxiv.org/shivamoggi) and highlight some specific aspects of his magnetic reconnection research that provides the theoretical framework for some aspects of the Princeton Magnetic Reconnection Experiment. He will also highlight some specific aspects of his magnetohydrodynamic turbulence research that predicted formation in kinetic Alfvén turbulence of vortices with radius of the order of the ion gyro-radius that appears to be confirmed by the recent in situ European multi-satellite observations in the magnetospheric cusp region. The latter theoretical formulation was recently among the top 20 downloaded papers in MIT’s premiere research journal Annals of Physics.
A free boxed sandwich lunch will be provided to all those to RSVP by Tuesday, April 22nd to Maddy Chokshi at mchokshi@mail.ucf.edu or via phone at 407-882-1141.
